Midwest Grocery Retailer - Retail Flooring Case Study

In a grocery store, almost everything depends on the floor. Pallet jacks roll in before sunrise, shelves are reset overnight, and thousands of customers cross the same paths every day. In retail, when a floor starts to break down, it changes how the space feels and functions. Employees work around it, customers walk over it, and both are affected by safety risks and cleanliness concerns.

A Vision for a Cleaner, Safer Storefront

After more than 100 years in operation, a Midwest-based grocery retailer had already seen what happens when standard-grade tile is pushed into an industrial role. Earlier stores used thinner, less dense tiles that looked fine on day one but began to crack as years of pallet jack traffic and point loads accumulated. For their new locations, they wanted to break that cycle.

Their goals were clear:

  • A long-term flooring solution that could support daily mechanical loads
  • A consistently safe, nonskid surface for both shoppers and staff
  • A clean, uniform look that reinforces their brand and can be replicated in future stores
  • Predictable performance with straightforward, manageable maintenance

This was a long-term decision shaped by growth. A consistent, dependable flooring standard mattered more than a short-term fix. And, at the time of writing, this engineered tile system has been in service for approximately one year across two locations in the retailer’s network.

Results at a Glance

Scope: 2 new grocery locations in the Midwest

Time in service: ~1 year at the time of writing

Mechanical performance: No observed tile cracking under daily pallet jack traffic and stacked product loads

Maintenance impact: Floors maintained with standard retail cleaning routines; no intensive repair cycles required

Safety and appearance: R10 surface supporting everyday slip resistance while retaining a clean, uniform look in high-traffic aisles

Flooring Challenges in High-Traffic Grocery Stores

Grocery environments sit somewhere between retail and light industrial use. That tension shows up directly in the floor.

On the operational side, this retailer needed flooring that could:

  • Handle heavy pallet jack traffic and stacked product without cracking
  • Remain slip-resistant, even near entrances and higher-moisture zones
  • Support long trading hours without frequent shutdowns for repairs

On the visual and brand side, they needed:

  • A uniform, replicable aesthetic for new stores
  • Color options that stay presentable despite dirt, salt, and day-to-day use
  • A layout and format that look intentional, not pieced together

Most grocery chains resolve this tension with polished concrete. It is familiar, relatively quick to install, and initially looks clean. But this retailer had seen polished concrete floors in the market lose their finish under aggressive traffic, become more porous, and require increasing effort to keep looking acceptable.

At the same time, their own experience with earlier tiles had shown that not all ceramic solutions are equal. When tiles lack thickness and density, the concentrated loads of grocery logistics, such as pallet jacks, display bases, and loaded racks, eventually win.

The underlying issue was simple to state and complex to solve: they needed a floor built to industrial standards but refined enough for a customer-facing space.

Retail‑Ready, Engineered to Last

The retailer approached Argelith looking for a more robust path forward. Our background is in industrial and commercial environments where floors must withstand heavy machinery, rigorous cleaning, and long service lives. That perspective proved to be a good match for the realities of modern grocery retail.

Rather than starting with a color chart, we started with performance requirements:

  • A fully vitrified structure designed to withstand heavy pallet jack loads and mechanical wear
  • Balanced slip resistance suitable for grocery environments that are cleaned regularly but not fully washdown
  • A surface profile that supports underfoot safety while still being easy to scrub and maintain
  • A large-format tile that creates a clean, uniform sales floor with fewer joints, making maintenance easier and the professional look simple to replicate as new stores open

The Engineered Flooring Specification

From this, we developed a tailored engineered tile solution:

  • 5/8" thick fully vitrified engineered tiles

    • High-density, fully vitrified structure designed for industrial-level load performance
    • Very low absorption to support hygiene and long-term cleanability
  • 16" x 16" format across the sales floor

    • Large format for a clean, uninterrupted visual field
    • Reduced joint count, which supports easier maintenance and a more refined look
  • R10 slip-resistant surface

    • A surface profile calibrated for grocery conditions, since it’s not a hose-down plant, but the floor can be subject to moisture at entrances and in high-traffic zones
    • A balance of slip resistance and cleanability, avoiding overly aggressive textures that can trap dirt
  • Color strategy for a branded environment

    • Titan Gray as the primary field color to deliver a modern, neutral base
    • Arkona White in selected areas to create contrast and highlight key zones

Coordinated Planning and Installation

Argelith worked closely with the installer and project team to translate the specification into a reliable result:

  • Confirming layout patterns and movement joint strategy for long runs of the floor
  • Aligning on appropriate setting materials and installation methods suited to fully vitrified tile
  • Sequencing deliveries to fit the overall construction schedule for the new store

The result was a high-performance floor that fit seamlessly into the familiar look and feel of the regional supermarket chain.

Aisles That Inspire Confidence

In the first year of operation, the floor quickly proved its value in daily operations at both locations.

The floor of a grocery store in an isle.

  • Exceptional mechanical resilience: The 5/8" thick, fully vitrified tiles have handled heavy pallet jack traffic and loaded fixtures without the cracking issues seen in prior, thinner tile installations.
  • Stable, nonskid surface: The R10-rated surface supports everyday safety for associates and shoppers, even in areas more prone to moisture.
  • Low-maintenance: With regular cleaning, the floor maintains its appearance without intensive repair cycles or surface rework.

The retailer’s team reports that, in the first year of use, the floors have performed extremely well and require very little maintenance, meeting the original goal of a long-term solution that supports uninterrupted store operations.

Visually, the floor provides the clean, uniform field the client had envisioned. The combination of large-format tiles and consistent color has become part of the store’s visual identity.

For a subsequent new store, they opted for:

  • Light Gray as the primary floor color to better mask visible salt staining in winter
  • Along with Arkona White, which has been very well received and remains part of their visual strategy

Because the underlying system is robust, the retailer can fine-tune the aesthetic while keeping a consistent, industrial‑grade specification in place.

The most important outcome may be what happens next. The retailer is now using this engineered tile specification in two new locations and is evaluating it as the basis for future stores, rather than treating each project as a one‑off experiment.

By moving away from light-duty tile toward an industrially engineered solution, they have:

  • Reduced the risk of premature cracking and patchwork repairs
  • Stabilized safety and cleanability across high‑traffic areas
  • Established a flooring template that serves both operations and brand presentation

This project demonstrates a scalable, retail‑ready flooring approach built for the realities of high‑traffic grocery environments.

Proven Performance at National Scale

While this case highlights a recent regional grocery installation, Argelith’s fully vitrified engineered tiles are already proven across large-scale retail environments where durability and repeatable performance are non‑negotiable.

Our engineered tile systems have been installed in more than 600 grocery locations nationwide for a leading international discount grocer. These stores operate with highly standardized layouts, continuous cart and pallet traffic, and long daily operating hours. All of which are conditions that quickly expose weaknesses in light‑duty flooring.

In comparable environments, polished concrete and light-duty commercial tiles often show premature wear, surface breakdown, staining, and ongoing maintenance demands under sustained rolling loads. Fully vitrified engineered tile is specified to eliminate those vulnerabilities, delivering dense, through-body performance designed for long-term structural integrity.

The consistent performance of our fully vitrified tiles across hundreds of locations demonstrates that the same specification used in this Midwest case can scale reliably to demanding national retail portfolios.
